Simple Crochet Applique Floret

A Very Basic 6 Petal Applique

While making a striped sampler afghan, I realized I did not like the wrong side of one of the stripes. And an ugly WS on an afghan makes an unhappy Rachel. I mean, just look. Ugh.

I decided to solve this by making some appliques and sewing them over the ugliness that is popcorn stitch wrong sides. All 32 of them.

Sound daunting? Well, the blanket is a long project. And it’s a bit big for me to carry around (I do need something to work on while waiting for appointments and such.) I can put the applique materials in a sandwich baggie and stick it in my purse. At home, I can attach 2 or 3 of these to the blanket each week, and be done with them by the time I’m finished with the rest of the project. Probably.

The applique needed to be simple to make, small, easy to sew on, and pretty flat so it wouldn’t catch on things. (Don’t think you have to worry about a blanket catching on things? Well, walk around with it on your shoulders, then toss it just anywhere on your messy couch, and you may change your mind about that.)

I came up with a very simple pattern I’d like to share with y’all. They take about 5 minutes to make. That’s for me, and I’m not the world’s fastest crocheter.

Materials

Yarn: sport weight or 2-ply lace weight yarn:
* 90″ for 1-color flower, – OR –
* 45″ for inner color, 50″ for outer color.
Hooks: 3.25 mm and 2.75 mm

Size: ½” to 1” in diameter

Instructions

  • Round 1: Using larger hook, make 6 scs into ring.
    Switch to smaller hook
    for the remainder of the pattern.
  • Round 2: slst in first sc, ch4, slst in same sc,
    (slst, ch4, slst) in each sc around,
    hold the working loop with a stitch marker,
    (12 sl sts, 6 ch loops)
  • Round 2.5: Using a tapestry needle, work the tail from the magic ring around the inner loops to build up depth.
    If you’re using 2 colors, change color here.
  • Round 3: work (slst, sc, hdc, sc, slst) in first ch loop and each loop around;
    trim end if necessary,
    use a tapestry needle to pull the yarn through to the back of the flower.
Round 2.5
Color Change

Anyway, I’m pretty happy with how the WS of my stripe is looking now. I used some of the same yarn of the blanket, split into 2 strands, so they would match perfectly.

I’ve done a few variations (some of which I don’t love), and I did a french knot with a dark blue through the center of one (on the upper right), which pulled through the ring of the applique and now sits on top of the crocheted fabric. It leaves a nice dark shadow there that I like, so happy accident.

The variations I tried were these:

Round 2 change: ch 5 instead of 4 for each ch loop.
I like this one for the single color version, and also the ones I did where the yarn is a bit fluffy.
Round 3 change: make (2 sl sts, sc, 2 sl sts) in each loop (instead of (slst, sc, hdc, sc, slst)
This didn’t sew on as nicely as the larger one, but I do like having 2 different sizes.
No Round 3: Skip round 3 altogether, and leave a visible opening in the center (that is, don’t make the magic ring tight.)
This was super cute by itself, but again I wasn’t thrilled with how it sewed on. I think if you were sewing it with thread to a fabric that was tighter, it would look great, though.
